With Ida Hanzelová, the development of administrative justice after 1989
The third episode of the Administrative Podcast is out, with Ida Hanzelová, an emeritus administrative judge and former President of the Administrative Chamber of the Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic, as the guest. The topic we discussed together is “The Beginnings of Administrative Justice in Slovakia, the Journey of Slovak Justice after 1989”.
Ida Hanzelová has been working in the judiciary since 1970, until 2014 she held the position of the President of the Administrative Chamber of the Supreme Court and since the establishment of the Supreme Administrative Court of the Slovak Republic she has been an advisor to its President. She begins her recollection by comparing the adjudication in the administrative agenda before and after the Gentle Revolution. She guides us through the process of creating new legal regulations that, in the time of state and economic changes, regulated the mechanism of judicial control of public administration. She was one of those who, with their practical experience, helped drafting laws contributing to the strengthening of the protection of citizens’ rights in confrontation with state power. In the interview, she brings her personal and unique perspective on the dynamic 1990s, as well as the period after 2000, which brought the first considerations of the creation of an independent system of administrative courts, leading to its gradual constitution after 2020, culminating in the creation of the Supreme Administrative Court and administrative courts.
